Why is my toe feeling strange?

For over 2 months now my toenail on my big toe on my left foot has felt strange. It's on the border of discomfort and pain. It feels at times as though the nail is ready to pop off at any moment or is loose and other times it has the feeling of a nail that's been cut too short. But I can assure you the nail hasn't been cut too short and by it's appearance alone it looks perfectly healthy. A few months ago on the inside crack where the toenail meets the skin about halfway dwn I pushed on it and pus came out, but that's about it. No redness, no swelling, no nothing and no pus since then. Any idea what this could be?
